Q:  How many diapers do I need?

A:  How many diapers you need depends on how often you want to wash them.  If you are going to wash every other day then I would recommend getting two days worth of diapers.  Newborns go through about 12 diapers a day, older babies about 6 to 8.

Q:  I have the diapers, what else do I need?

A:  Along with your cloth diapers, I suggest getting cloth wipes, wet bag, diaper pail, pail liner, disposable liners, hemp inserts.

Cloth Wipes:  If you are using cloth diapers, making the switch to cloth wipes is easy!  Think of whats easier to clean your hands, a paper towel or washcloth; same with baby's bottom!  Double layer terry/fleece wipes work best for cleaning messy poops, yet gentle enough on baby's bottom.

Wet Bag:  While you are out you will want somewhere to put those dirty diapers.  These waterproof bags are perfect for diapers, soiled clothes, bathing suits and more!

Diaper Pail:  Pickup a large sized kitchen trash can to be used as your diaper pail!

Pail Liner:  These waterproof bags work great inside your diaper pail to hold the dirty diapers until wash day.  When its time to wash, simply take the liner out, and turn it inside out inside the washer and toss it in too.  No touching of dirty diapers needed!  It is nice to have a second one to use while one is washing.

Disposable Liners:  Newborn poop is water soluble, however, once baby starts eating solid foods, you will need to flush the poop.   Adding a disposable liner to the diaper makes this task much easier.  Simply place a liner inside the diaper and once soiled, turn the diaper upside down above the toilet to dispose of.  Liners that are wet not soiled can be washed and re used a few times.

Hemp Inserts:  These inserts are something that heavy wetters and older babies require.  They are more absorbent than microfiber and are a perfect solution for overnight diapers.

Q:  How do I wash my diapers?

A:  Getting a good wash routine can be a bit challenging because there is no clear answer to what is perfect for everyone.  You want to use an additive free detergent and generally need 1/2 to 1/4 of what you would use for clothes.  Always do a cold pre-wash to remove any solids.  Next do a hot wash/cool rinse.  Washer cycles usually have a rinse built into the wash cycle but we suggest doing an extra rinse to make sure all detergent is gone.  If your diapers come out still smelling a little dirty, use a little more detergent.  After the diapers are washed, most diapers can be dried on medium heat.  To increase the life of your diapers, I recommend only drying inserts, prefolds and wipes.  If you hang dry your pockets, covers, wet bags and pail liners they will dry quickly and last longer.
